Here is What You Need to Get Your Clothing Made + The Fashion Design Process
- Create a regular sketch of your design – (front and back) – Get Digital Fashion Pro Business Class or Higher.
- Create a technical sketch (front and back) – Get Digital Fashion Pro Business Class or Higher. Note the Beyond the Basics Upgrade that comes in this package will teach you how to create technical sketches.
- Put your sketches on a Spec Sheet – Get Digital Fashion Pro Fashion Mogul or Style Blast Edition. This edition will include the Fashion Business Center Upgrade. You can also buy this item separately. It will include Spec Sheet Templates + Video training on how to fill out Spec Sheet.
- Add your garment measurements to your spec sheet. If you need help with garment measurements, see the Spec Book in our store. You can also just add your own measurements if you already have them.
- You will then need to determine what fabric you want to use. Get the artwork ready, if any, that will go into your design. The Official Step by Step Guide to Starting a Clothing Line Course (which comes in the Mogul or Style Blast Edition) will go into preparing artwork. - Together, all of these components combine to create what is known in the industry as a Tech Pack.
- Now you can save your Tech Pack as a PDF so that you can print it out or E-mail it to a professional pattern-maker, seamstress or manufacturer for them to either make a pattern for you or go straight to sampling and manufacturing your garments. How Do I Communicate the Color I want My Clothing to Be or Fabric?
This is another great question that is important in getting you clothes made professionally by a clothing manufacturer. The standard way to communicate color is by having a Pantone Textile Guide. Pantone Textile Guides gives you the ability to use a color reference code to communicate to your clothing factory, fabric mill or any other process that requires color matching. The guide is recognized worldwide. All major and small factories have a Pantone Color Guide on hand. When you give them a reference color code they can look it up and adjust dyes etc. accordingly to achieve the color you desire.
Ultimately getting your clothing made is about being able to communicate your design to the person or company making your garment. Sending your garment details by email will get the job done. You just want to make sure the garment sewing person or company you are working with accepts the type of files that you will be sending. Most clothing factories accept Jpeg, PNG, Excel and PDF’s. New designers used to believe that a garment pattern needed to be made first. This is not the case and has not been the case for a long time.
You should vet multiple companies to find the right one that can deliver quality, on-time delivery and at a price point that you can afford. A pattern is not required for this step. In fact, unless you have spent a lot of time developing your pattern and getting the garment made, your pattern may still need some tweaking. Therefore, it is best just to let the company you are working with do it based on just your specs (blueprint).
